After experiencing increasing chest pain, Stan drove himself to the Emergency Room at Central Baptist Hospital in Lexington, KY. Because Katy had just driven to Albany, NY, to visit with their daughter and friends from their previous church, Stan was hesitant to alert Katy until he knew more about his condition. An EKG revealed that Stan’s heart was “normal” and there was talk of releasing him that night with a plan to follow up with specialists later in the week, but his chest pain and abnormally high blood pressure caused the ER team to move cautiously. A second blood test was ordered and revealed that Stan’s heart was indeed in distress, and Stan was told that he had perhaps suffered a “mild” heart attack during the day on Sunday. The plan was to admit him to the hospital and talk with a cardiologist the next day. However, at about 11:00 p.m., Stan suffered a real heart attack. Because he was already being monitored in the ER, the medical team responded immediately. He was taken to surgery at about 1:00 a.m. for a heart catheterization. A stent was inserted in an artery that was 90% blocked. The procedure revealed that his heart was strong, and no damage had occurred. Within a short time, Stan noted that there was no more pain in his chest, and his blood pressure started to return to normal levels. After a day in the ICU, he was released Monday evening.

Katy decided to return immediately from New York to be with Stan. Their daughter, Elisabeth, and her husband, Ben, shared the 14-hour drive with her. They arrived at the hospital mid-afternoon on Monday. A few hours later, Stan was discharged and now they are all together at home. Stan is weak, but he feels fine and anticipates a return to normal patterns of life and work in the next week or so.

Stan and Katy are very grateful for the many prayers and expressions of love (visits, texts, emails, phone calls, food, etc.) that have been showered upon them during the past few days.

As Stan and Katy reflect on all that has happened, they marvel at the goodness and grace of God especially that:

  • Stan had the discernment and strength to drive himself to the ER at Central Baptist Hospital.
  • The ER staff had the wisdom to keep Stan overnight even though the initial tests (EKG, etc.) revealed no immediate danger.
  • The heart attack occurred while Stan was in the Emergency Room!
  • Stan’s heart is strong and has not been damaged! Other than the medication now required, Stan should not experience any long-term negative effects from his heart attack.

To God Be the Glory. Amen.

Praying for you brother. God is good all the time, all the time God is good. Since I am so much older than you, what do I need to do to prevent this from happening to me?

As I look at the smiling picture of you and Katy on the cover of High Calling, the space at my table is empty tonight, but I am praising God that the head place at your family table will not be vacant! Miracles happen and I, along with countless others, are grateful to Abba that your life is one. Know you both are loved.
    To God be the glory.

So thankful to the Lord for His keeping power, brother Stan! That means there’s still work here for you to do! My husband, Jeff, had a similar situation, but there was heart damage. Jesus healed it on the third day, though! Praise the Lord!

Jack and I have just learned this news and are praying for Stan, Katy and the entire family. Jack also had a heart-related incident during a routine colonoscopy on Thursday – we were thankful he was also at the hospital when it occurred.

God’s peace and healing, dear friends.

    Blessings!

Praise God for His sustaining grace, Stan. Watch the new stent. Some of them fail (get blocked) within the first year. I had two of them put in, and one of them failed. A backup stent has not failed. God bless.

    Stan:
You were covered early in prayer for you and katy and kids and grandkids.
Sorry, but it appears it’s a miracle I had just seen this same situation happen with a friend at Porter. Same picture same events in order. NO ACCIDENT. As we both know there are no accidents with God nothing catches him by surprise. The enemy attacked but God had a path in the right place at the right time. You are blessed because there’s so many in this country and around the world have no idea what God can do and wants to do to take care of us.
I may call later I would come down for a visit but I know you have family there.
    Take care friend,
May God richly bless and protect for you and Katy and kids and grandkids.

So Satan picked a Sabbath to shoot an “earthly-body” warning shot across your sternum “bow.” I am sure he meant it for evil but the Great Physician “miss-timed” the attack to prove that the proper physicians in the right place at the right time can be angels if the hurting human follows good judgement and gets himself to the right place at the right time. How much you are like Joseph in being able to say that our physiology dealt you a tough deal but God meant it for GOOD. I think He is glorified. Please continue to be like my hero – Eric Liddell – run the race because you can still feel God’s Glory. Blessings, Marvin
